The Project

The school that Park House English School has chosen to support this year is Gnana Deepa Matriculation School, located in the Salem District of Tamil Nadu, India.

The school itself is a project that was founded in 1970 by Roy & Catherine Devaraj. During this year the couple visited the Kalrayan Hills where they learned that 95% of the people that lived there (adults included) were illiterate. During the 1970s the couple set up small farming projects to teach the local people how to make money from the crops they grew. In 1989 the family decided to create a school for the local children.

The school has grown from 12 children being taught in a thatched hut to the current number of 672 pupils, with 22 staff. The school has been growing steadily by approximately 100 children each year.

In addition to the school Bethesda Children's Home was started in 1993, designed to care for orphans, semi-orphans and poor children. There are now 84 children living in this home.

What is Park House School wanting to do?
As the school has new children starting every year, there is no longer space for them all in the classrooms. The aim was to raise 70,000 Qatari Riyals (approx. $20,000) to build 5 new classroom at the school.

We are delighted to announce that we have raised approximately 100,000 QAR! This means that we will be able to equip the classrooms with items such as desks, boards, books, paper, stationary etc.

Whilst overseeing the investment of the charity money raised, Mr Coomer, Mr Diver & Mr Funnell will be spending 3 weeks actively involved in the school's daily life. They will be sharing their own teaching ideas, working with staff on various teaching methods and teaching classes themselves! In addition to donating money, Park House School is keen to assist in sharing information, which includes us learning from Gnana Deepa School!
